Efrem M Good performances, ok casting, abysmal script. Could have been much better. It just needed a completely different approach and a better structured script. That's a shame, because Julianne Moore's truly wonderful performance deserved awards consideration. She is by far the highlight of this slice of life comedy/drama, and even when the plot begins to strain credulity a bit, Moore keeps everything anchored. She is one of the bravest actors at work today - physically and emotionally - and her performance is raw and honest. There's not much of a plot here - it's definitely a character study - but like a good meal, the more I thought about it afterwards, the more I realized how special it was. There is a plot twist 3/4 of the way through involving Turturro that I felt didn't seem realistic, but it's a minor quibble. The supporting cast is exceptional, with a couple faces I haven't seen in a long time. And the soundtrack is wonderful - everything from Earth Wind and Fire to Laura Branigan! It reminded me a bit of a film like RACHEL GETTING MARRIED in its emotional realness and character introspection - and that is high praise indeed!
