AGATHA CHRISTIE MARPLE: THE MURDER AT THE VICARAGE (Joan Hickson) ,R2 DVD
Miss Marple books really don't need to be read in order — you can enjoy them in whichever order you happen upon them! I'll tell you as I go which of these are my favorites and then I'll recommend a few to start with after I've listed them all.
Vowed not to do another film after Miss Marple: A Caribbean Mystery (1989), but was persuaded to return for the final two films in 1991 and 1992. She then retired from the role, believing that she should stop while the programme was still at the peak of its popularity.
Her novel And Then There Were None is one of the top-selling books of all time, with approximately 100 million copies sold. Christie's stage play The Mousetrap holds the world record for the longest initial run.
The best actresses who played the role of Miss Marple, of all time are, Margaret Rutherford and Joan Hickson The brilliant Margaret Rutherford. Was The Best Miss Marple. Robert John Hastilow and Joan Hickson was Agatha Christies favourite.
After three seasons Geraldine McEwan decided to relinquish the part of Miss Marple, and Julia McKenzie was cast to replace her. McKenzie did not mimic her immediate predecessor, but instead provided an interpretation that was somewhat quieter and more thoughtful, and more likely to be a quiet observer of human nature.
She is best known, however, for the role she earned at age 78: Agatha Christie's pesky, matronly sleuth, Miss Marple, in the popular BBC series seen widely in the U.S. on the A&E cable channel. Her mannish looks and arched eyebrows in the series made her an indelible presence. She played the role until she was 90.
She's a die-hard spinster, or at least she that's what she is Christie's novels, because in this TV-film it is suddenly revealed that Miss Marple had an affair with a married man prior to World War I.
But in the case of her beloved Miss Marple, Christie thought Hickson would be perfect for the role after seeing her in a play and wrote her a letter saying, “I hope one day you will play my dear Miss Marple.” Hickson initially thought she wouldn't be right for the role, but Christie eventually got her wish when the ...
Christie wasn't too keen on Rutherford's comic version of Marple, who even had a cameo in the 1965 Poirot spoof The Alphabet Murders. The more austere representation of Marple by Angela Lansbury in the 1980 adaptation, The Mirror Crack'd, might have been more to Christie's tastes.
Most refer back to previous books but you don't get the true character development if you read out of order. I prefer to read in order, but occasionally have randomly picked up a book and liked it so much that I have started at the beginning of the series and continued in order.
JDL You definitely don't need to read the Poirot books in order. HOWEVER, one should be advised that "Hercule Poirot's Christmas" directly spoils the earlier Poirot mystery, "Three Act Tragedy" a.k.a. "Murder in Three Acts".
The first four novels in the series are chronological, and you should read them as they were written. As for the last one, it is a prequel story, and you can read it out of order if you feel like it. But the best option is to leave it for the end.
You don't need to read the series from the beginning, either – there's a sentence or two worth of summary in the story that tells new readers what they need to know, and they'll be happy to pick up the first books after they're done.
